If you are looking for some great Demon Slayer fanfiction then look no further.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese manga series.
In 2019 a TV show about Demon Slayer was made.
And in 2020 a sequel movie to this series was also made. This turned out to be the highest-grossing Japanese movie of all time.
The series follows a young boy named Tanjiro Kamado who finds his family being slaughtered by a demon.
His sister Nezuko survived the attack but is slowly changing into a demon herself.
Tanjiro then is recruited by a demon slayer and goes through rigorous training.
So if you like to read great manga and watch anime series and movies, then Demon Slayer might be just the thing for you.
Along with the manga, anime series, and movie, there is a whole world of Demon Slayer fanfiction out there.
But in this post, I will be writing about some of the most popular Demon Slayer fanfiction according to hits received on Archive Of Our Own.
Keep reading to find out more about some of these amazing and original stories.
1. Sunlight from the Ashes
In this story Tanjiro goes through a dozen loops, going over his life time and time again.
But every time he is only able to save his family by becoming a demon himself.
Even though he now realizes this, he keeps going back and trying again, because he can’t bring himself to not save his family.
There are 56 chapters in this story, but it does end with a cliffhanger.
That is because this story is part 4 in an ongoing series called “Continual Sunrise”.
The writer did say you can read the story on its own because there are some explanations about previous events.
But still, if you enjoyed this story be sure to check out the other parts.
2. little bunny, why are your eyes so red?
This story is a role reversal trope.
Tanjiro and Nezuko have changed roles in this story, making Tanjiro the demon instead of his sister.
He still has some human emotions and is battling internally with himself being a demon.
Even though Nezoku is the surviving human in this story, the focus is not on her but still on Tanjiro.
So instead of following the survivor training to become a demon hunter, we see the demon trying to cope with what happened and how he is changing.
Of course Nezoku’s story is very much of importance to the totality of this story.
And the writer has found a great way to incorporate both sides of the story into this, giving the reader a full view of the story.
The story is built up in 26 chapters total and has already received 114,000 hits.
3. Hold Your Breath
In this story, we follow Izuku Midoriya, who is living next door to Nezuko Kamado.
He is kind of scared of her and already has some suspicions about what she really is.
But then his mother has to go away for a week and Nezuko has offered to watch over him.
They form an unlikely bond as she then tries to train him the way her brother the demon slayer trained her.
The story has some great character development.
Even though the storyline is completely different from the original, it still feels like a true Demon Slayer story.
The writer knew what they were doing when putting this together and it is a well-built story that is worth your time.
4. The Past Breathes Again
This is a crossover between Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia.
Izuku Midoriya is the main character in this original story.
Somehow he finds himself in the body of a child with the memories of a great demon hunter.
He sets out to find the demon he fought before and to find out what happened to him and the world he used to know.
The writer has found a nice and original way in bringing both worlds together.
Also, this story has 27 chapters, many with extreme cliffhangers that make you want to keep reading and finding out more.
The story is part 1 in the ‘reincarnation’ series.
The series contains 4 parts so far but is still updated on a regular basis.
So be sure to check out the rest of the story if you want to know what happens next.
5. The Dragon of Change
Here we also have a story about Tanjiro becoming the demon and Nezuko the demon slayer.
Tanjiro was raised to be a demon hunter and to do all the hard work.
But when he is turned into a demon with only Nezuko left to save everyone, his world falls apart.
He tries very hard to maintain his humanity, but it is taking everything he has.
We follow Nezuko for the majority of the story during her training and the demons she finds on her path.
Life has been hard for her but she knows what she has to do to save the people she loves.
The story contains 13 chapters and has over 65,000 hits so far.
The writer has said that this is the first part in a series, but so far there haven’t been any updates about the second part yet.
6. The Color of the World

In this one we also see Nezuko training to be a demon slayer so she can save her now demon brother and avenge her family.
While training Nezuko finds out her skill is a common type of synesthesia.
This basically means she can feel different senses through each other, so when she sees someone she can link that person to a specific smell or taste.
The writer only really changed the main character roles but did stick to the rest of the world from the original series.
So there is no alternate universe or anything like that.
The story already has over 59,000 hits and it is very popular among its readers.
7. yet he feels like sunlight
Here we have yet another role-reversal story but with a lot more changes than just that to the original story.
Nezuko has to become the demon hunter to save her now possessed brother.
She has a sort of sixth sense in knowing when Tanjiro is in need of her help.
This has always been there, but with the training, it gets enhanced even more and this helps her on the journey to save her brother.
We mostly follow Nezuko’s point of view, but the last chapters also follow a bit of Tanjiro’s point of view.
And I think the way the writer has put this together really makes the story feel complete.
The story has 14 chapters in total and it does feel like there is more to the story.
However, the writer hasn’t updated the story in a long time so this might be the true ending.
8. enbu
In this story, we also see a form of crossover between Demon slayer and My hero academia.
Izuku finds out that in his mother’s family tree there is a lineage that goes way back to Tanjiro Kamado.
This means that demons might actually be real and he is not sure what to think of this.
He finds it hard to deal with this and then he actually meets Tanjiro.
But how is this possible and what does he want of Izuku?
It only has 1 chapter with a total of 7007 words and is therefore a very short story.
The writer stated that this is part 1 in the series “Midoriya Izuku is not (not) a demon slayer”
However, for the time being, there is no second story yet.
9. Wisteria Tears and Smiles of Sunlight
In this story, Tanjiro is attacked and turned into a demon.
His attacker, Muzan, then kidnaps him and turns him into a sort of mercenary.
Muzan trains him to attack and kill his enemies but on his first mission, he comes face to face with his sister.
Nezuko, now a demon slayer, is out on her own for the first time, trying to kill a demon.
This is when she sees it is her own brother who has lost all his human memories.
The interesting twist to this role-reversal story makes it an original on its own.
The story contains 8 chapters that are all very easy and fast to read.
So if you are looking for an interesting and fun read, check this one out.
10. The Doctor who Dances with the Dawn
In this story, we do not follow the standard Tanjiro and Nezuko tale.
Instead, this is more of a Yoriichi reincarnation fanfic.
He returns in this life as a doctor, who is sent to the Kamado home to help with the sick father.
Somehow Yoriichi feels there is something familiar about Tanjiro, but he does not know what right away.
And during the story, he retrieves more and more of his memories.
But he does not know why he has returned and why his memories of past lives keep haunting him.
A great twist to the original story and it has a lot of fans.
