Hermione Granger is best known for her intelligence and quick thinking.
She even used a time-turner to attend a physically impossible number of classes.
When not in class, Hermione is usually in the library or getting her friends out of trouble.
She has other admirable qualities, too, though.
Many fans are fond of her propensity to campaign for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized (e.g. S.P.E.W.).
There’s also no doubt she has enough courage to equal any other Gryffindor.
But, Hermione Granger also has a ruthless streak.
In her very first year, she set a Professor on fire to save her friend (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, ch. 12.)
When Hermione was fifteen, she trapped the reporter, Rita Skeeter, in a jar for at least a week (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, ch. 37).
At eighteen, Hermione temporarily deformed Harry to hide his identity from Snatchers (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, ch. 23).
Hermione’s unflinching, ruthless pragmatism is rarely explored, despite these examples.
What would Hermione be like if she was encouraged to “use any means to achieve [her] ends” (J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, chapter 7)?
This is the premise of many fanfictions that feature Hermione as a Slytherin.
However, this premise has more to offer than exploring Hermione’s altered character development.
Hermione is a muggleborn, so most of the canon Slytherins are prejudiced against her.
This gives the story an automatic source of conflict early in the plot.
Can Hermione use her intelligence and ruthlessness to beat the odds?

1. Red or Green
After the final battle, Hermione returns to Hogwarts to complete her seventh year.
She wants to return to something familiar after a year of hunting horcruxes.
She’s looking forward to studying in the Gryffindor common room by the fire, preparing for her N.E.W.T.S.
Instead, Hermione ends up re-sorted into Slytherin… and Draco Malfoy into Gryffindor.
They both share the feeling of not belonging and of being different people after the war.
Could this circumstance in common bring the two long-time enemies together?
2. The Green Girl
As a well-read first-year, Hermione immediately ruled out being sorted into Slytherin.
After all, she is a muggleborn, and Slytherin has a reputation for blood-purist beliefs.
The school wouldn’t put her somewhere that ill-suited, surely?
When that is exactly what happens, though, Hermione finds her assumptions challenged.
To her surprise, the other Slytherins (mostly) accept her as one of their own.
Now she just has the issue of being in the house most hated by the rest of the school.
How will her choices and friendships differ?
How will they affect Harry’s conflict with Voldemort?
Explore the ripple effect of Hermione’s sorting in this complete 140k word fic.
3. The King’s Indian Attack
Slytherin plots are a favorite subplot to include in fanfiction stories.
But, most of them are amateur plots hatched by teenage students.
In this fic, witness the plan hatched to alter the course of Fate by Professors Aurora Sinistra and Severus Snape.
Their plot leads to the sorting of both Harry Potter and Hermione Granger into Slytherin.
Will this change successfully undermine the manipulative Headmaster’s own schemes?
And, therefore, alter the war that hasn’t yet started?
This 75k word fic is part one in The Emerald Glass series.
The second part is underway, last updated in the fall of 2022.
It pairs Hermione with Draco, and Harry with Daphne.
4. The Queen of Slytherin
In this 133k word fic, Hermione meets Draco Malfoy before they are sorted.
His rudeness gives her a new ambition.

But, in The Dark Trio, Harry ends up growing up on the streets.
Harry’s ambition, born on the streets, to become something more lands him in Slytherin.
Hermione and Ron end up in the same house.
They fight for themselves, rather than taking sides in the war, and they become a force to be reckoned with.
This is the first part of a series currently in its third installment.
8. A Trio of Serpents
This is another fic featuring the entire Trio sorted into Slytherin.
Unlike The Dark Trio, however, this fic takes a detour in later chapters into humor and crack.
The author warns from the beginning that this fic is “crack treated seriously.”
Amidst the humor, this story focuses on the friendships between the trio.
If you’re a fan of Ron having seer abilities, you should also enjoy this story.
It’s quite long for a crack fic, and completed with just shy of 150k words.

This story is complete with just over 30k words.
This is another time-travel Tomione fic with plenty of unique themes.
Hermione goes back to the time of Tom Riddle and Grindelwald as a thief.
It turns out that destroying the Deathly Hallows wasn’t Harry’s best idea.
Hermione goes back to steal the Deathly Hallows and restore them in her own time.
But, she’s messing with the laws of time travel and Death.
Hermione also didn’t count on enjoying the young Voldemort’s company.
This fic reads like part Harry Potter, part spy novel.
It’s still in progress but has over 190k words to catch up on in the meantime.
13. The Slytherin Court
When Hermione gets her Hogwarts letter, she thinks she finally has a place to belong.
She is hopeful that there, she won’t be bullied for her strangeness and intelligence.
